Summer means more time outdoors — garden lighting, hot tubs, pond pumps, and power tools for that overdue fencing project. It also means more electrical equipment exposed to damp grass, rain, and general wear that indoor sockets never see.
1. Outdoor sockets need RCD protection
Any socket used outdoors should be RCD-protected — this is what cuts power almost instantly if a fault occurs, which matters far more outdoors where damp conditions increase shock risk.
2. Hot tubs need a dedicated, correctly installed supply
A hot tub is one of the highest-power appliances many homes will ever run, and running one from an unsuitable supply is a common and serious safety risk. It needs its own correctly rated circuit, not an extension lead from the kitchen.
3. Check garden lighting and pond pump cables for damage
Cables left out over winter or dragged across lawns can develop nicks or wear that aren’t obvious at a glance. A quick visual check before summer use is worth the five minutes.
4. Don’t run extension leads through wet grass
It’s a common shortcut for powering tools or lighting further down the garden, but a domestic extension lead isn’t designed for prolonged outdoor or wet-ground use.
5. Consider a proper outdoor circuit if you use your garden a lot
If you’re regularly running lighting, a hot tub, or power tools outdoors, a dedicated, weatherproof outdoor circuit is safer and far more convenient than relying on extension leads year after year.
